Child Care Philosophy
Consistency and schedules make my world go round! I believe that children thrive best on schedules. During the average day in my care, you can be sure that your child will take part in a schedule that encourages a variety of functions to help them grow and develop into well rounded little people. This includes socialization, outings to explore the world around them; such as picnics, play dates, or long walks, proper sleep schedules, healthy meals, independent play, interactive play, and educational activities, crafts, and games. From a nanny’s perspective, schedules can become a tentative map for the day, helping the day run with flow and ease. From a parental perspective, weekly schedules allow you to have an idea of what your child will be doing and where they are throughout the day. Even with schedules, I understand the fact that things don’t always go according to plan; therefore schedules are always viewed as tentative guidelines of potential goals.
Consistency and schedules go hand in hand in my book. I believe that consistency in routine is helpful for children. It provides children with a sense of comfort and direction by allowing them to have an idea of what is going to happen throughout the day. Consistency in discipline is also a factor for the day running smoothly. My philosophy on discipline is simple; I believe in encouraging proper behavior by acting as an example to children and I believe that it is important that my yes means yes and my no means no. I find that establishing this from the beginning of our relationship creates a mutual respect that keeps things peaceful and creates little need for actual punishment. I understand that children do not always have the ability to properly verbalize their feelings. Therefore I believe that children should be allowed to express their emotions such as crying when frustrated and should be encouraged to positively verbalize their feelings in a respectful manner. Prior to the age of time outs, I believe that children should be calmly verbally corrected and then distracted. In the event that a child is completely out of control, I believe in time outs in 1 minute increments according to age. Time outs always include an explanation of why the child received time out, an apology from the child, and a big hug. *I will never discipline a child physically even if given permission by the parents.
